We are a youth led platform dedicated to creating edutainment contents and events for the community paying homage to the culture of learning and togetherness upheld at vibaraza /verandas among other physical spaces that serve the same function.
Our story:
Balcony Series space
Paying homage to the concept behind kibaraza, which is predominant in Swahili culture - kibaraza is a covered physical space mostly found infront of a house where people usually gather for different purposes. Our kibaraza serves as a knowledge generation area, entertainment arena and a safe space where young people can voice their concerns and find solutions to their problems, with a primary focus on art, health and business
Balcony Series events
We host our events monthly to cater to the needs of our audience, mostly young adults and professionals who are art lovers, keen to adopt healthy lifestyles and attain financial stability. We have previously hosted themed painting sessions, film screening and discussions and business showers amongst others. We are open to individuals or organizers who would like to collaborate or partner with us in our monthly events
Balcony Series contents
We create a range of audiovisual formats ranging from documentaries, video series, zines to podcasts. Most recently, we have produced Mwana hiti films documentary in collaboration with Picha Time. Mwana hiti is a fertility doll of the Zaramo, Kwere and other matrilineal ethnic groups in Tanzania. The doll together with other objects and rituals is used to initiate young girls into womanhood. The film is a reflection on the practices and coexistence of Mwana hiti traditions and modern ways used to teach young girls about sexual and reproductive health. We work closely with artists from different walks of life to create unique products under our atelier called Balcony Series Karakana. Feel free to reach out to us if you are an artist who would like to realise your ideas, expand your portfolio and earn though your art. We are excited! We will soon be sharing the details of our first ever product, a Conversational card game made in collaboration with Visual Creative lab
